Introduction to Primary Health Care (CNH 261/262)

This is the entry level course for both the Associate's and Bachelor's degree programs in Health Care. The goal of this course is to introduce students to the biological and health sciences and to equip them to be primary health workers, through both didactic and laboratory training. Students benefit from the expert instruction of practicing professionals, including physicians, nurses, physician assistants, social workers and health educators.

General Information

The clinical field assignment, which is an integral part of the course, follows the Lecture Phase, and is compulsory. The field assignment will take place somewhere in Africa. This will be a time of putting into practice, skills learnt in the classroom and of learning to minister in a cross cultural setting. Basic clinical skills, as well as skills in cross-cultural communication, are practiced and developed; this allows students to share the knowledge that they have acquired with local people.

What will the school teach me?

The introduction to Primary Health Care School is the entry-level course for both the associate and bachelor degree programmes in Health Care. It introduces students to the biological and health services, and equips them to be primary health workers with a third world perspective. Students benefit from the expert instruction of practicing professionals, including physicians, nurses, physician assistants, social workers and health educators.

The instruction includes:

A Christian Perspective of Health Care: a Biblical basis for ministry to the whole man.
Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology: the groundwork is laid to achieve a basic knowledge and vocabulary in the structure and function of the human body. A medical approach to body systems is emphasized which prepares the student to understand disease processes.
Strategies in Primary Health Care: the overall strategy of primary health care is outlined and related to such topics as immunization and seven target diseases, malnutrition, breast feeding, management of dehydration in children, assessment and care of the sick child, and use of growth charts. A survey of the most common diseases in developing nations, including diagnosis and treatment is included.
Practical Clinical Skills: an introduction is given to basic physical assessment skills as well as wound care, bandaging, sterile technique, medication administration, vital signs, emergency child birth, first aid, and managing medical emergencies.

Prerequisites

Completion of the Discipleship Training School and Field Assignment (YWAM-DTS).

Credits

20 credits will be earned upon successful completion of the Introduction to Primary Health Care Lecture Phase (CNH 261) and Field Assignment (CNH 262). These credits may be applied towards a UofN Associate's and Bachelor's degree in Primary Health Care or transferred to other colleges and universities.
